A tightly coordinated stolen-car sweep out of Portland’s East Precinct on Tuesday, June 23, pulled eight stolen vehicles off local streets and led to nine arrests across the metro area, police said. The Stolen Vehicle Operation (SVO) sent air units over Multnomah County, pushed into Washington state, and featured one motorcycle rider who reportedly hit more than 100 miles per hour before finally giving up inside a Vancouver business. In a separate stop, officers say they also uncovered multiple fraudulent documents as investigators continue follow-up work.

Operation results

According to the Portland Police Bureau, the mission pulled in a long list of partners: Gresham Police Department, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Port of Portland Police, Multnomah County Parole and Probation, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Auto Theft Task Force, Vancouver Police Department, TriMet and community group PDX Stolen Cars.

Initial numbers released by the bureau: eight stolen vehicles recovered (six occupied, two unoccupied), nine arrests, eight arrest warrants served, seven vehicle eludes and two vehicle pursuits. The operation also helped officers arrest Wayne Price, 44, in connection with a local burglary investigation. He faces burglary and drug-related charges as those cases move through the courts, police said.

Partners and the Auto Theft Task Force

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Auto Theft Task Force regularly teams up with PPB and other regional agencies on more complex vehicle-theft cases. In a recent news release, the DA’s office outlined how its auto-theft investigators work with local police to track down stolen property and help build cases for prosecution, highlighting the prosecutorial side of these coordinated missions.

How the high-speed chase ended

PPB says an East Precinct officer tried to stop a motorcycle with no license plates, but instead of pushing a ground pursuit, officers pulled back and let two airborne units monitor the rider from above for about an hour. The motorcyclist reportedly crossed back and forth between Oregon and Washington and at times exceeded 100 miles per hour.

With backup from Vancouver Police, the rider eventually ditched the bike and ran into a business before surrendering to officers. No injuries were reported. In a separate incident in Southeast Portland, officers used a PIT maneuver to safely stop a reckless driver and say they found numerous fraudulent documents and identification inside that vehicle.

Why the sweep matters

Police describe the sweep as part of an ongoing push that PPB says has helped drive down vehicle theft across the region. Local coverage and police briefings have pointed to the SVO program as producing dozens of recoveries and arrests in recent years and drawing national recognition for its data-driven strategy and reliance on community partnerships.

Legal notes

People arrested in the operation will be booked and their cases forwarded to prosecutors for charging decisions. As the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement continue to emphasize, arrests are allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. Both the DA’s office and PPB say investigations remain active, and additional charges or new leads could surface as detectives keep working the cases.
