Pre-dawn gunfire at 3rd Avenue and Pike Street sent a man to the hospital early Friday, after he was shot in the leg and the gunman bolted into the downtown streets. Officers spent the early morning canvassing the blocks around the intersection, but by mid-morning no arrest had been reported.
Seattle Police Department officers were called to the area around 2:30 a.m. for reports of a shooting. They found a man with a gunshot wound to his left leg and rushed him to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. As officers worked the scene, the Seattle Department of Transportation alerted drivers that police activity was blocking streets around Pike Street, 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue, according to KIRO 7.
Gun Violence Unit Has Handled Downtown Incidents Before
The Seattle Police Department’s specialized Gun Violence Reduction Unit often takes the lead on shooting investigations in the downtown core. That team has previously handled other incidents in the 3rd and Pike corridor, according to the department’s blotter, SPD Blotter.
Search And Street Closures
After the shot was fired, the suspect ran west down Pike Street, then turned north through an alley, police said. Officers searched the surrounding area but did not find the person, according to KIRO 7. Detectives with SPD’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit are now handling the case. As they began canvassing for witnesses, police did not immediately release a suspect description or any information about a possible motive.
