A San Antonio man died early Thursday after his sport-utility vehicle rolled over and slammed into a barrier on eastbound Interstate 10 near Seguin. First responders arrived in the pre-dawn hours to find the SUV on its roof, pinned against a concrete barrier, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene as crews worked to secure the area and document the wreck.
According to the Seguin Gazette, Seguin Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Rhea said responders were called at about 5:50 a.m. and found the man already deceased when they arrived. The outlet reported that the victim was identified only as a San Antonio man and that Seguin police are handling the investigation; authorities had not released his name in the initial hours after the crash.
Where the Crash Happened
The rollover took place on eastbound I-10 just east of the State Highway 123 bypass, a heavily traveled stretch of interstate on Seguin’s east side. That corridor is in the middle of a multi-year Texas Department of Transportation widening and resurfacing project, and a January analysis by MySA found Seguin police had logged dozens of collisions inside the I-10 construction zone this winter. TxDOT has since lowered speed limits, added more signage and rolled out other steps intended to improve work-zone safety. TxDOT’s project page outlines the work and its traffic impacts.
Investigation and Response
Seguin police and fire crews stayed on scene while investigators examined the wreckage and collected evidence. Officials have not released a probable cause for the crash or publicly identified the victim, citing the need to notify family and complete additional police work first. Rhea shared the initial details, including the 5:50 a.m. dispatch time, with the Seguin Gazette. The City of Seguin lists contact information for the fire department and its battalion chiefs for residents seeking official updates.
Safety Reminders for Drivers
Officials continue to urge drivers to slow down and stay alert in active work zones, where lane shifts and constantly changing traffic patterns can quickly lead to trouble. TxDOT’s San Antonio District keeps maps and project updates for the I-10 Guadalupe widening project and advises motorists to follow posted speed limits and signage whenever crews are on-site. TxDOT also provides the latest closure and detour information for the corridor.
