One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a one-vehicle crash at Northeast Lombard Street and Northeast 72nd Avenue in Portland's Cully neighborhood early Tuesday morning. Emergency crews responded shortly after 3:30 a.m., closed off nearby streets, and called in specialized investigators after the vehicle slammed into a pole.
According to a press release from the Portland Police Bureau, officers were dispatched at 3:27 a.m. for a report of a single-car crash involving a pole near Northeast Lombard and Northeast 72nd Avenue. When officers arrived, they found one occupant deceased at the scene, while a second person was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The Traffic Division Major Crash Team is handling the investigation, and police say street closures remain in place while they document the scene and collect evidence.
As reported by KATU, NE Lombard is closed between NE Cully Boulevard and NE 72nd Avenue, and NE Killingsworth Street is closed from NE Cully Boulevard to NE Lombard during the investigation. The station also reports that anyone with information is asked to email [email protected] and reference case number PP26-189188.
Where This Happened and Why It Matters
Northeast Lombard is a major east-west arterial that carries heavy traffic through North and Northeast Portland, and the corridor appears on the city’s High Crash Network, which identifies streets with a disproportionate share of serious and fatal crashes. Safety advocates and transportation planners often point to a mix of road design, vehicle speeds, and enforcement as key factors in crash risk on busy routes like Lombard, a designation highlighted by the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
Recent Incidents Add to Safety Concerns
This latest crash follows other major collisions near Lombard earlier in the month, including a June wreck on I-5 north of the Lombard interchange that shut down the freeway and triggered a major-crash response. That deadly I-5 wreck and similar incidents have renewed calls from residents and advocates for additional safety measures along Lombard and nearby routes.
Investigators have not yet released the identities of those involved or a probable cause for Tuesday’s collision, and officials say more details will be shared when they are available. Anyone who has information and has not already spoken with investigators is asked to email [email protected] and reference case PP26-189188, according to KATU.
