State and federal investigators say the party is over for a major drug trafficking crew that had been moving fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine through the Merrimack Valley and Boston. A coordinated series of raids this week led to arrests in Lawrence, Methuen, Haverhill and Boston, along with the seizure of large quantities of narcotics, firearms and roughly $100,000 in cash. Prosecutors say the crew was feeding supply lines tied to overdoses in Essex and Suffolk counties, and that the case grew out of a months long probe into local distribution networks.
According to a press release from the Office of the Attorney General, investigators recovered approximately 3,800 grams of fentanyl, about 385 grams of methamphetamine, 200 grams of cocaine, four firearms with large capacity magazines, roughly 100 rounds of ammunition and about $100,000 in U.S. currency. The release credits the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit and federal partners with leading the takedown effort.
Local reporting by Western Mass News says 10 people from Lawrence, Methuen, Haverhill and Boston now face trafficking, conspiracy and firearms charges, with judges setting bail as high as $250,000. The outlet reports that the Attorney General’s office ties the organization to deadly fentanyl overdoses across Essex and Suffolk counties.
How the probe worked
The Attorney General’s office says the investigation, dubbed "Operation Lights Out," began in October 2025 when the State Police Detective Unit opened a narcotics probe into the group’s hierarchy, communications and supply sources. Investigators obtained more than 100 investigatory warrants and on June 24 coordinated roughly 120 troopers and officers to execute search warrants at seven homes, two public storage lockers, one business and six vehicles. They also seized seven cell phones for forensic analysis, according to the Office of the Attorney General.
Arraignments and charges
Seven people were arrested during the coordinated raids and arraigned in Lawrence and Roxbury district courts, while three additional suspects had already been in custody since May, according to Western Mass News. The outlet reports charges that include multiple counts of trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine, along with conspiracy and firearms offenses. Court schedules and filings will determine whether the cases stay in state court or get bumped up to federal prosecutors.
Why it matters
Fentanyl remains the leading driver of overdose deaths nationwide, and law enforcement officials argue that dismantling supply networks can slow the flow of deadly pills and powder into communities. Provisional data from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics show an estimated 107,543 drug overdose deaths in 2023, with synthetic opioids making up a large share of those fatalities. This latest takedown is one more entry in a growing list of state and federal operations targeting mid level distributors in the region.
Prosecutors and investigators say the probe is still active, and that court records will lay out more detail as arraignments continue. Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact local law enforcement.
