A 46-year-old woman died Sunday after an early-morning crash on a rural stretch of County Highway 60 east of Vergas, where her vehicle left the road, rolled several times and trapped her inside. Emergency crews pulled her from the wreckage and took her to Perham Health, where she was later pronounced dead. The single-vehicle rollover happened just before 7:30 a.m. on June 14 and remains under investigation.
What Happened on County Highway 60
According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, the westbound vehicle left the roadway, hit an approach and, as responders reported, “rolled multiple times” before stopping near a tree line, FOX 9 reported. Crews from Vergas Fire and Rescue, Perham Fire, Perham Ambulance, Perham Police and county deputies all responded and worked to free the lone occupant from the damaged vehicle.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Perham Health, where she was later pronounced dead. Officials have not publicly released her name or any probable cause for the crash, and investigators are still piecing together what led the vehicle off the roadway.
Rural Roads and Rollover Risks
Crashes like this are a familiar and troubling pattern on low-volume rural highways. Federal and state research has long noted that single-vehicle run-off-road crashes on these roads often lead to rollovers and disproportionately severe injuries.
The Federal Highway Administration identifies rural roadway departures as a core safety concern, and statewide transportation reports continue to flag rural fatalities as a major issue for planners. Local Otter Tail County documents also highlight speed and roadway studies on CSAH 60 in the Vergas area, pointing to how roadway geometry and roadside features can raise the stakes when a driver leaves the pavement; those details appear in meeting materials from Otter Tail County.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities told FOX 9 that the investigation is ongoing and the driver’s name has not yet been released. Anyone who may have information about the crash is asked to contact the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office; the department’s contact information and office locations are available on the county website.
The sheriff’s office says it plans to release additional details as the investigation continues.
