A 74-year-old woman was killed early yesterday after she was hit by two vehicles on Interstate 75 in Monroe, according to authorities. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and state troopers have launched an investigation into the fatal collision.
According to WKRC Local 12, a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol states the crash occurred at 5:19 a.m. on June 21, when a semi-tractor-trailer struck 74-year-old Norma Jean Howard near mile marker 31 on I-75 in Monroe. After that initial impact, Howard was hit by a second vehicle, and emergency medical crews pronounced her dead at the scene, the release says.
Where It Happened
The collision unfolded near mile marker 31 on I-75 in Monroe, a heavily traveled north–south stretch of highway in the Cincinnati area. Troopers have not released information about the drivers involved or why Howard was on the interstate at that hour.
Why Highway Pedestrian Strikes Are So Deadly
High-speed corridors like interstates are especially hazardous for people on foot because vehicle speed and design greatly increase the likelihood that a crash will be fatal. National safety research has found that pedestrian deaths have climbed sharply in recent years and continue to make up a significant share of U.S. traffic fatalities, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Investigation And Next Steps
Authorities say the crash remains under investigation and have not announced any charges or released vehicle descriptions, according to WKRC Local 12. Hoodline will update this story if the Ohio State Highway Patrol or local agencies make additional information public.
