The 4500 block of Potrero Avenue turned into an active crime scene today as Richmond police launched a homicide investigation and shut down the area to traffic and foot traffic.
Officers and detectives remained on scene throughout the morning, stringing up tape and collecting evidence while asking residents to stay away from the immediate area. At the time of the department’s public update, police said they had no additional details to release about a victim or any possible suspect.
In a Facebook update, the Richmond Police Department said detectives were "gathering evidence and following up on leads" and urged anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters can call the department’s non-emergency line at (510) 233-1214 or use the anonymous tip options listed by the department.
Investigators Seek Witnesses and Video
Local reporting shows this latest case is part of a troubling pattern, with Richmond seeing multiple homicide investigations in recent months and detectives repeatedly calling for witness accounts and camera footage.
Earlier this month, Hoodline covered a Nevin Avenue street killing, and another reported on an April homicide on Aberdeen Way. Neighbors told local reporters they remain on edge as detectives continue follow-up in those cases and now add Potrero Avenue to the list.
How To Share Tips
For the Potrero Avenue homicide, Richmond police are asking anyone who was in the area and may have captured video or photos to contact investigators as soon as possible. That includes security camera footage, dashcam video or cell phone clips from the surrounding blocks.
The city’s Richmond Police Department page lists the latest non-emergency phone number, as well as options for submitting anonymous tips through the department’s tip line and other channels.
Investigators say no further information is available for release at this time and are asking for the community’s patience while they work through leads and review evidence from the scene.
