A 33-year-old Chicago man is behind bars after prosecutors say he barged into his ex-girlfriend’s Addison apartment in March, dragged her out while she slept and forced her into a car. He remains jailed ahead of a June 9 court appearance.
How prosecutors say it unfolded
According to prosecutors, Tomie Nickles III went into the woman’s Addison apartment in the early hours of March 8 while she was asleep, grabbed her by the arm and neck, and pulled her outside to a waiting vehicle. As reported by CBS News, they say he held her by the neck, forced her face toward the passenger-side window, and later let her out before driving off. The woman contacted police after she made it back home.
Arrest and court dates
Prosecutors say a U.S. marshal task force tracked Nickles down in early June and took him into custody, after which he was booked into the DuPage County jail. The DuPage County Sheriff's Office online roster shows he remains in custody. Court filings indicate he made his first appearance on June 6, when a judge ordered that he stay jailed while he awaits trial.
Charges and prosecutor's statement
Nickles faces a long list of charges: one count of home invasion, two counts of kidnapping, six counts of domestic battery, one count of residential burglary and two counts of unlawful restraint, according to CBS News. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said he "cannot begin to imagine the terror the innocent woman must have felt," according to prosecutors.
What’s next
Nickles is scheduled to return to DuPage County court on June 9 for further proceedings, according to court calendars. The case will continue through the 18th Judicial Circuit’s pretrial process as prosecutors determine whether to pursue additional charges or move toward indictment.
