A metro Atlanta IRS customer-service office in Chamblee is dealing with more than tax headaches, according to employees who say the building has been overrun by rats. Workers report dead rodents, droppings and pests sprinting across workstations, with at least one employee quitting over health fears. Staffers and former workers shared photos and videos of carcasses under desks and sticky traps in common areas, and some said they started perching on chairs and desktops to avoid stepping on the floor.

Workers Describe Unlivable Conditions

Former employee Sydney Monger told local reporters that rat sightings spiked after Memorial Day, and she said coworkers began feeling sick around the same time. Monger said she resigned rather than risk tracking anything home. WSB-TV published her account along with images workers say were taken inside the building, showing droppings and rodents in and under cubicles.

Traps, Footage And On-the-Record Complaints

In coverage that included staff-shot video, FOX 5 Atlanta reported that rat traps have been set throughout the facility and that some rodents have fallen from ceiling spaces or darted across employees’ feet. The station also showed black traps lined up around the building’s exterior and additional footage supplied by workers as crews try to gauge how extensive the infestation really is.

IRS Response And Next Steps

The IRS told local stations it is aware of the complaints and is investigating and working to remediate the problem, saying that “Like any large building in an urban environment, it can face pest-related challenges.” WSB-TV reports the agency has not provided a timeline for a deep remediation or said whether the Chamblee office might temporarily close for fumigation. In the meantime, workers say they are still on edge about health risks and day-to-day conditions as pest-control efforts continue.
