Morning classes at Los Angeles High School were abruptly interrupted Wednesday when an apparent armed road-rage encounter spilled onto campus, forcing a lockdown and drawing a heavy police response. Students and staff sheltered in place while Los Angeles School Police and LAPD officers swept the grounds and detained at least one person.
According to police, the incident started with a road-rage report in the 1100 block of West Boulevard in the Mid-Wilshire area, where a caller said someone with what looked like a firearm threatened another person. The alleged victim then followed the other driver to the nearby Los Angeles High campus on West Olympic Boulevard, where school police detained one individual as officers searched for evidence, including any possible weapons, NBC Los Angeles reported.
"Today, the school initiated a lockdown," a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson said, noting that both Los Angeles School Police and the Los Angeles Police Department were conducting a campus-wide search and that the district would provide additional details when available, according to NBC Los Angeles.
On-scene response
School police detained one person on campus while LAPD officers moved through buildings and surrounding areas as part of the search. As of the latest information, officials have not released details on any arrests beyond that initial detention or said whether a weapon was found.
Previous lockdowns and neighborhood context
This is not the first time Los Angeles High has gone into lockdown over reports of potentially armed individuals nearby. In March, the campus was placed on a precautionary lockdown after a separate report of possible armed suspects in the area, an incident documented by ABC7. The stretch of Olympic Boulevard near West Boulevard is a busy corridor that periodically sees rapid police responses, which can trigger precautionary safety measures at surrounding schools.
What to watch
LAPD investigators are leading the follow-up, and LAUSD has said it will share updates through official district channels as they are confirmed. This story will be updated when authorities release additional information.
