A routine call in Rockdale County turned tragic Friday evening when a fire truck overturned, killing an on-duty firefighter, county officials said. The rollover happened near the intersection of Sigman Road and Eastview Road, where aerial footage showed the apparatus on its side with emergency crews working the scene. Officials have not yet released the firefighter's name, saying they are waiting to notify next-of-kin. The crash is under active investigation and authorities have released few other details so far.
According to Atlanta News First, the station's First Alert chopper flew over the wreckage and captured video of the overturned truck and an ambulance responding to the scene. County officials told the outlet that the firefighter was on duty at the time and confirmed that the crash was fatal. Investigators are working to determine what led to the rollover.
Scene And Local Response
Emergency personnel shut down traffic around the intersection while crews secured the wrecked truck and checked for any additional injuries. Rockdale County Fire Rescue, which operates from an administrative building and ten stations and responds to more than 11,000 calls a year, lists its headquarters at 1496 Rockbridge Road NW in Conyers, according to the county's website. Local officials have not said which station, unit or specific apparatus was involved in Friday's crash.
Fire Truck Rollovers In Context
Rollovers involving fire engines and ladder trucks are relatively rare but often serious, and investigators typically examine factors such as speed, road conditions and vehicle maintenance. Similar incidents have been reported in other cities recently. In May, a Montgomery fire truck overturned near East South Boulevard, but officials there said no one was hurt, according to WSFA. When a firefighter is killed in the line of duty, departments commonly launch internal reviews and may bring in outside investigators to scrutinize what went wrong.
Atlanta News First has described the Rockdale crash as a developing situation and said it will update coverage as officials release more information. Hoodline will publish official statements and public records, including any county press release or fire department update, as they become available.
