Mostly cloudy skies are hanging over Lunken Field this morning, with temperatures sitting in the low 60s. Showers and thunderstorms are on the way this afternoon, with the prime window roughly between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sudden downpours and frequent lightning could make a mess of evening commutes across the Cincinnati metro.
This Afternoon And Evening
Temperatures are expected to climb to a high near 86°F this afternoon, with a light southwest breeze of about 1 to 8 mph. Showers and thunderstorms are possible between about 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., then become likely from roughly 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. New rainfall amounts should generally land between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, though pockets of heavier downpours are possible.
Another round of more widespread storms is in the cards for tomorrow, with additional rainfall totals of a half to three-quarters of an inch and locally higher amounts late Friday into Friday night. That could be enough to trigger brief flooding and slow commutes, according to the National Weather Service.
Plan Ahead
Expect hit-or-miss downpours and lightning during afternoon activities, and give yourself extra time on the roads. If you encounter standing water, turn around rather than try to drive through it.
Looking ahead, if temperatures spike next week with highs near the mid-90s beginning Monday, June 29, the city will have cooling centers and other resources available for those who need them. For a list of local cooling locations and heat safety tips, check the City of Cincinnati.
What This Means For You
Today's and tomorrow's storms look more like pockets of heavy rain and gusty winds than a setup for long-lived tornado threats. Areas with poor drainage could see brief flooding and ponding on roadways, which is bad news for anyone trying to rush home.
Keep an eye on watches and warnings this afternoon and tonight, and be ready to move outdoor plans inside if storms start to move in.
