Clear skies and a cool start near 61°F at Sacramento Executive Airport early Monday quickly give way to a sharp warm up across the city. Afternoon highs are expected to top out near 95°F, and with overnight lows only slipping into the upper 50s, Sacramento will not get much of a break after sunset.
Heat Risk Through Tuesday
According to NWS Sacramento, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, for portions of the northern and central Sacramento Valley, with the hottest readings away from the Delta. Forecasters note that daytime humidity will drop into the teens, and that the combination of elevated temperatures and dry, breezy afternoons is boosting the risk of both heat illness and wildfire starts.
Delta Breeze And Afternoon Gusts
The Delta breeze should keep riverfront neighborhoods and the immediate Delta region a few degrees cooler than inland areas, but much of Sacramento is still headed for the mid to upper 90s. Expect gusty afternoon winds, with valley gusts up to about 20 mph and localized gusts in the Delta that could reach 25 knots, roughly 30 mph. That will make outdoor work feel tougher and can ramp up fire danger in drier foothill zones.
Plan For The Heat
If you need a cool place or assistance, the City of Sacramento posts heat safety guidance and directs residents to 2-1-1 for updated cooling center locations. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the mid afternoon peak, check on elderly neighbors and pets, and schedule any heavy outdoor work for the cooler hours.
When Relief Arrives
Temperatures should start to ease by Wednesday, with a more noticeable cooldown Thursday into the weekend as onshore flow strengthens. Highs are expected to settle back into the 80s by Thursday. If you have outdoor plans later this week, keep an eye on localized forecasts and official updates.
