Samsung Electronics is packing up its U.S. headquarters from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and heading to Plano, Texas, in a move that tightens the company’s American footprint around its sprawling North Texas campus and chip operations. Company leaders briefed staff this week and are targeting completion of the relocation by year-end, a shift that could affect roughly 1,000 workers currently based in Englewood Cliffs.
The relocation was disclosed internally to employees, and a company official said Samsung is “preparing for the relocation with the goal of completing the move within this year,” according to Yonhap. The Korea Times reported that most Englewood Cliffs staff are expected to be reassigned to Plano, with a smaller group staying behind to support local New Jersey operations.
Why Texas?
Industry watchers say Samsung is pulling its U.S. command center closer to its Texas semiconductor and device operations to tighten coordination and trim costs. ChosunBiz and other outlets have pointed to cheaper real estate, tax benefits, and a deep pool of engineering talent as key draws for Texas. Samsung has also been quietly bulking up in Plano since unveiling its North Texas campus plans in 2018, as outlined in the company’s own Samsung Newsroom post on the site.
What it means for Englewood Cliffs workers
Roughly 1,000 people work out of the Englewood Cliffs headquarters, and most of them are expected to get offers to relocate to Plano, according to The Korea Times. A smaller local team will stay in New Jersey to handle the remaining regional functions. Yonhap reported that Samsung plans to finalize details on headquarters operations and workforce allocation after completing an internal review, so employees are still waiting to see exactly how their roles will shake out.
Plano footprint
If Plano feels like an obvious landing spot, that is because Samsung is already dug in there. The company has consolidated teams at the Legacy Central campus and pushed into additional space at 6625 Declaration Way, according to The Dallas Morning News. State records from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation list Samsung projects at the Legacy Central address, underscoring how much the tech giant has already invested in the area. With sizable semiconductor facilities in Austin and Taylor, a Plano headquarters fits neatly into Samsung’s Texas triangle.
What to watch next
On the near-term checklist: a formal public announcement, details on relocation packages, and clarity on how much moving assistance Samsung will offer to affected New Jersey staff. AJU Press reported that the company has already notified employees and is still aiming to wrap up the move this year. Meanwhile, officials in both Englewood Cliffs and Plano will be watching closely as Samsung’s final plan comes together, with local tax bases and broader economic ripple effects very much on the line.
