As of 5:35 a.m. ET Saturday, June 6, 2026, Washington is waking up to clear skies and temperatures around 70°F at Reagan National. The warmup comes fast today, with highs expected to top out near 95°F this afternoon as gusty west winds kick in and make it feel even hotter. It is a good day to shift any strenuous outdoor plans away from the mid-afternoon window, when conditions will be most uncomfortable.
Afternoon Heat and Gusty Winds
Temperatures are forecast to climb into the mid-90s Saturday, with west winds of about 3 to 12 mph and occasional gusts up to around 22 mph. Heat indices could briefly reach the mid-90s between 3 and 6 p.m., so that classic swampy D.C. feel will be out in full force. A Small Craft Advisory is posted for the upper Potomac and Chesapeake from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., signaling choppy conditions for smaller boats, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms late Saturday evening mainly for the northern suburbs and the Baltimore metro, according to the NWS Baltimore/Washington.
Evening Storms Most Likely North
Any storms that do fire up late are most likely to graze areas north of I-66/US-50 and along the I-70 corridor in far northern Virginia, northern Maryland and parts of the Baltimore metro, rather than the District core. Where these storms pop, they could bring a quick burst of heavy rain and gusty, potentially damaging winds, so evening plans in those zones should stay a little flexible.
On the Water and Commute
Mariners are advised to avoid small-craft operations in exposed upper waters during the advisory period, since gusty winds and passing squalls could make conditions hazardous. For drivers, any brief downpours this evening could cut visibility fast and make bridges and ramps slick, so the commute may require a bit of extra caution.
How to Plan
Hydrate generously, wear light clothing, and try to reschedule heavy outdoor work away from the mid-afternoon peak if you can. If you will be north of the city or out on the water this evening, keep a close watch on updated local forecasts and be ready to move indoors quickly if a thunderstorm heads your way.
