Pink Taco’s Seaport outpost at 374 Congress Street has gone dark, its doors locked behind a modest “We have permanently closed” sign taped to the front. With that, the final U.S. branch of the once-buzzy, neon-pink Mexican chain that stretched from New York to Los Angeles is off the map. Local restaurant watchers and social media sleuths spotted the closure this week, but diners and staff have been left without any official explanation.
As reported by The Boston Globe, Instagram photos showed the Seaport storefront barred off, and private-equity owner Z Capital Group did not respond to calls about what happened. The Globe also noted that Apex Hospitality, which folded Pink Taco into its portfolio earlier this year, has kept quiet as well. The Seaport restaurant, which opened in 2019, built a following with all-day Taco Tuesdays and weekend hangover brunches.
Local coverage kicked in after a post in the Friends of Boston’s Hidden Restaurants Facebook group caught attention; NBC Boston picked up the thread, confirmed the closure at 374 Congress St., and noted that other Pink Taco locations around the country had already gone dark.
From Las Vegas to the Seaport
Pink Taco debuted in 1999 in Las Vegas as a Hard Rock-adjacent concept before pushing into Los Angeles and other cities, according to Boston Magazine. The cheeky name and neon-heavy branding sparked plenty of attention over the years, even as the chain’s national footprint slowly shrank.
Private equity and the end of a brand
In January, Z Capital Group announced the creation of an Apex Hospitality platform that folded Pink Taco into a broader national portfolio, pitching the move as a way to scale dining and entertainment brands. Z Capital Group’s announcement does not spell out why the Boston restaurant later closed, and neither ZCG nor Apex has offered additional comment.
What comes next for the Seaport spot
For now, the pink-walled space at 374 Congress St. sits empty, with that small “We have permanently closed” notice doing all the talking. There is no public timeline for a new tenant, and neither Z Capital Group nor Apex Hospitality has issued further comment on the closing, as noted by NBC Boston.
