
A Thursday afternoon scare at Wheaton Regional Park ended with a single reported gunshot, a shell casing on the ground and no victim in sight, according to Montgomery County police.
Officers were called to the park at about 3:40 p.m. after reports that two men were fighting over a gun. Responding units recovered one shell casing but did not find anyone who had been shot at the scene. As of Thursday evening, police said no arrests had been made and the investigation remained active.
According to DC News Now, the Montgomery County Department of Police said officers were dispatched to the Shorefield area of the park after witnesses reported a physical fight involving a gun. Investigators told the outlet they recovered a single shell casing and that officers were still canvassing the area with no suspects in custody.
Where It Happened
Wheaton Regional Park spans about 538 acres and includes Brookside Gardens, wooded trails and several recreation areas, according to Montgomery Parks. The Shorefield section, where officers responded, features playgrounds, a miniature train and other family-friendly amenities that regularly draw visitors from across Montgomery County.
Investigation Remains Active
Police have released few additional details about the incident and detectives continued working the case Thursday evening. The report adds to a string of weapons-related calls in the Wheaton area in recent years, including a 2025 incident in which shots were reported at a Wheaton retail store, as reported by FOX5 DC.
