LA Fitness is pulling the plug on its Sixth Avenue Tacoma club at 5915 6th Ave, with the doors set to lock for good at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 20. Front-desk staff have been telling members the shutdown is permanent, and say corporate notified local employees this week without offering any explanation. Regulars who rely on the gym's pool, courts and group classes are now scrambling to rejigger their routines before the closure hits.
Signs taped to the front doors this week confirm the timeline, and Fitness International LLC, the parent company of LA Fitness, told reporters it would close the site, according to the The News Tribune. Front-desk representative Luis Guzman told the paper staff were informed by corporate only this week and given no further detail. Members were told they can keep their memberships active at two other Tacoma clubs or at locations in Federal Way and Puyallup. One member, Kazuko Wohlers, summed up the mood for the paper: "Everybody is frustrated" about losing the neighborhood gym.
Federal Scrutiny Casts A Shadow
The Federal Trade Commission sued Fitness International in August 2025, alleging the company made it "exceedingly difficult" for members to cancel and that those practices led to unwanted recurring charges, according to the Federal Trade Commission. LA Fitness has pushed back on the claims, calling them "without merit" in statements reported by national outlets such as the Washington Post.
Members Wonder What Comes Next
Downtown and Sixth Avenue members say they were blindsided by the short notice and are already worrying about longer drives, packed parking lots and more crowded weight rooms at nearby clubs. Staff at the Sixth Avenue location told reporters they had only a brief heads up from corporate and could not answer questions about future staffing or whether any employees will be reassigned. Members are being directed to contact their home club or LA Fitness customer service for account details, transfers and other options. The LA Fitness page for the Tacoma Sixth Avenue location lists a phone number and current hours for anyone with questions.
The Tacoma club will close on July 20 at 2 p.m. Members who need help before then can call the club directly or reach out to LA Fitness customer service. We will update this story if the company offers more detail about the building's future or explains the decision to shut down the Sixth Avenue site.
