Thick, dark smoke rolled over Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley on Thursday after a scrap yard fire near N. 16th Street and W. Bruce Street sent plumes into the sky and left nearby streets under a murky haze. Firefighters and police flooded the area as crews worked to beat back the flames and protect surrounding properties.
What happened
According to WISN 12 News, fire crews responded to a scrapyard blaze in the Menomonee Valley on Thursday, with smoke clearly visible around the neighborhood while the Milwaukee Police Department handled traffic control. A WISN crew remained at the scene and planned to update the story as more information came in from officials.
Recurring blazes at the same intersection
For people who live or work around N. 16th Street and W. Bruce Street, this scene is becoming uncomfortably familiar. The intersection has a history of scrapyard fires that send thick smoke across the valley and at times drift toward downtown. CBS 58 reported a large scrap pile fire near that corner in January 2025, and local TV archives from FOX6 show similar incidents at Miller Compressing and Alter Metal Recycling in prior years. Those earlier fires often kept firefighters on scene for extended operations but generally did not result in reported injuries.
Firefighting challenges and smoke hazards
Milwaukee Fire Department officials have noted that pile fires involving mixed metal and refuse can create thick, potentially toxic smoke even when flames are limited to a single section of the yard. "From a firefighting standpoint, it was relatively contained to just that pile," Battalion Chief Joel Rechlitz told CBS 58 after a past incident, while cautioning that smoke can pose health and visibility risks for people nearby. Authorities urged residents to steer clear of the immediate area and warned drivers to expect delays while crews worked.
Drivers should be prepared for lingering smoke and traffic disruptions around N. 16th and W. Bruce as officers direct vehicles and firefighters finish suppression efforts. WISN 12 News remained on scene to provide updates, and we will add developments as officials release more details.
