A late-night argument inside a Kenwood home ended in gunfire Wednesday, leaving a 46-year-old woman critically wounded after she was shot in the face, according to Chicago police. She was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and officers say a man is in custody and a firearm has been recovered.
As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the woman and a 37-year-old man were inside a house on the 4600 block of South Ellis Avenue around 11:30 p.m. when an argument escalated. Police say the man allegedly pulled a gun and shot her in the face. He then left for another location, where officers arrested him and recovered a firearm. Charges are still pending.
Kenwood, just north of Hyde Park, has seen sporadic gun violence along stretches of South Ellis, a pattern visible in the City of Chicago's public crime dataset. Earlier shootings have been reported on the same 4600 block in recent years, underscoring the block's recurring place in neighborhood crime coverage. One example is a 2023 incident detailed by FOX 32 Chicago, in which a 31-year-old man was shot on the street.
What police say
Police told the Chicago Sun-Times the shooting "appeared domestic-related," and that Area 1 detectives are handling the investigation. According to the paper, the woman was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, and officers recovered a gun when they arrested the suspect. Prosecutors will determine what charges to file. Investigators have not released the names of those involved as the case moves forward.
Neighborhood context
Community groups and local leaders have spent years pushing for violence-prevention work and more investment in Kenwood, particularly around blocks that surface again and again in police blotters. That ongoing effort has been a recurring theme in local coverage, with WTTW's community reporting, for example, pointing to a mix of long time neighborhood institutions and newer development that residents say shapes how they respond to safety concerns and recover after violent incidents like this one.
