What started as a late-night confrontation in South Los Angeles turned into a street shooting that left a man wounded and two people in handcuffs, authorities said.

According to police, a man was shot in the leg Monday night after an argument spilled into the street near East 67th Street and South San Pedro Street. Officers quickly took two suspects into custody, and Los Angeles Fire Department personnel transported the wounded man to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Newton Station officers were dispatched at about 10:46 p.m. Monday. An LAPD spokesman told City News Service that the trouble began when the victim allegedly pushed one of the suspects, who, along with a second suspect, then chased the man and shot him in the leg, according to MyNewsLA. Police said the arrests were made without incident. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released additional details.

Incidents in Newton's patrol area

The shooting adds to a tense stretch for parts of South L.A.’s Newton Division. In April, two men were wounded near Trinity Recreation Center in a daylight attack, as detailed in coverage of a daylight shooting near Trinity Rec Center. That reporting highlighted residents’ ongoing worries about safety at neighborhood parks and the role Newton detectives play in follow-up investigations.

In the wake of the latest violence, community leaders and police are once again urging anyone with information to speak up so detectives can sort out what led to Monday night’s incident.
