A south Nashville arrest attempt turned chaotic Friday morning when a suspect allegedly rammed a federal officer’s vehicle while trying to get away, authorities said. The suspect was taken into federal custody near Frontier Lane and Edmondson Pike, with Metro Nashville police assisting at the scene. Officials have so far released only limited details about the crash and the suspect’s identity.
What Happened
According to the federal officer involved, they were attempting to make an arrest when the suspect tried to flee and drove into the officer’s vehicle in what appeared to be an escape attempt. Metro officers backed up federal agents at the scene, and the suspect was ultimately detained and placed in federal custody, as reported by WSMV.
Legal Implications
Federal law takes a hard line on run-ins like this. Under 18 U.S.C. § 111, assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer is a federal crime, with penalties that increase when there is physical contact, injury, or use of a weapon. The GovInfo text of the statute and the Justice Department manual both note that prosecutors do not always have to prove a defendant knew the victim was a federal officer, a detail that can factor into charging decisions.
A Worrying Pattern
The crash adds to a recent string of cases where drivers allegedly used their vehicles to try to muscle past law enforcement. In mid-May, a driver was accused of deliberately slamming a car into two marked patrol vehicles during an attempted traffic stop in south Nashville, according to WSMV.
What’s Next
Federal investigators typically take the lead when an alleged assault on a federal officer is involved, and MNPD said the scene remained under investigation late Friday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Metro Nashville Police Department; newsroom and contact details are available on the department’s website at the Metro Nashville Police Department.
