A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday afternoon in South Salt Lake after colliding with an SUV, a crash that shut down part of 3300 South for several hours and sent rush-hour traffic scrambling for alternate routes. The collision happened just after 3:45 p.m. near 3300 South and 200 East, blocking the intersection while emergency crews worked the scene. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of a Mazda CX9 was taken to an area hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Shaun Ward, a spokesperson for the South Salt Lake Police Department, told KUTV the motorcyclist struck a Mazda CX9 at the intersection. According to KUTV, the rider died at the scene, and the driver of the Mazda was transported with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The Utah Department of Transportation estimated the roadway would remain closed into the evening, roughly until 9:15 p.m., snarling traffic on nearby routes.
Motorcycle Safety in Utah
The collision comes amid a troubling trend for riders in the state. The Utah Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety said preliminary statewide numbers showed motorcyclist fatalities rising in recent years, with a 32% increase reported in 2025 compared with 2024, according to UDOT. State reporting last year also noted 53 motorcyclist deaths in 2024, a 15-year high, as outlined by Deseret News. Transportation officials say summer months tend to be deadlier for riders and stress visibility, helmets, and speed control as key prevention measures.
What Drivers Should Know
3300 South is a major east-west arterial that carries heavy traffic through South Salt Lake, and the corridor has been the focus of recent Utah Department of Transportation improvement projects. Drivers in the area should expect delays and plan alternate routes while investigators process the scene. KUTV's report did not include the rider's identity, and South Salt Lake Police had not released further details by the station's publication time.
