A string of nine home burglaries on Chicago's South and Southwest sides has residents rattled and police stepping up patrols, according to a community alert issued by the department. The break-ins, clustered over the past two weeks, hit multiple neighborhoods, including Clearing, Garfield Ridge, Brighton Park and Archer Heights, as detectives work to zero in on who is behind the spree.
According to WGN‑TV, the burglaries were reported between May 30 and June 10 along several residential block corridors. Police listed locations that included blocks on South Mobile, West 51st and South Western, and said valuables were taken from the homes. As the alert went out, detectives were canvassing affected areas and reviewing surveillance footage for clues.
Police describe suspect tactics
Investigators told WGN‑TV the offenders often “gain entrance through the rear or front door,” then “ransack the home and take jewelry, money or safes.” Witnesses have pointed to a dark-colored SUV as a possible getaway vehicle leaving the scene after several of the incidents, police said. While officials noted there is no indication the burglars used violence, they are urging residents to stay alert and report anything suspicious.
How to report tips
Anyone with information is asked to contact Chicago police or submit an anonymous tip at CPD TIP, according to authorities. Similar community alerts have been used in previous investigations, including cases in which elderly residents were targeted, as reported by NBC Chicago. Detectives are also asking neighbors to save any doorbell or security camera recordings and to avoid confronting suspects themselves.
Simple steps residents can take
Police recommend residents lock all doors and windows, keep exterior lights on and record suspicious activity on cameras or phones when safe to do so. Neighbors are encouraged to share information through block clubs or CAPS meetings and to report fresh suspicious activity to 911 so officers can respond quickly. Preserving any available footage and noting key vehicle details, such as color and type, can help investigators track down leads in the case.
