Sugar Creek Night Sweep Bags Drugs, Gun Near Troubled Garden Inn

A late-night police blitz in one of north Charlotte's most complained-about corridors ended with multiple arrests, a pile of drugs off the street, and one less illegal gun on Sugar Creek Road.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say officers with the North Tryon division carried out a targeted enforcement push in the Sugar Creek Road and Reagan Drive area, branding the effort "Operation Nite Shade." The sweep followed fresh landscaping work at the Garden Inn and Suites at the end of May, a visible signal that authorities are trying to clean up more than just the shrubs.

Neighbors have long called the stretch around Interstate 85 and West Sugar Creek Road a magnet for trouble, and this latest operation is part of a broader effort to convince residents that the tide is finally turning.

What CMPD Says

According to CMPD, North Tryon officers carried out 26 traffic stops, made 10 arrests, issued eight citations, and took an illegal firearm off the corridor during Operation Nite Shade. The department says officers also seized more than 31 grams of suspected fentanyl, nearly 7 grams of suspected cocaine, about 2.63 grams of suspected crack cocaine, and over 7 grams of suspected marijuana, according to CMPD News.

Police described the operation as a continuation of recent cleanup work at the Garden Inn and Suites, suggesting the fresh mulch and trimmed hedges are just the start of what they hope will be a larger reset for the property and the surrounding blocks.

Follow-Up To Federal Raid

The sweep comes only weeks after a high-profile raid on the Garden Inn and Suites involving both federal agents and CMPD. At the time, prosecutors said they had evidence the hotel had turned into a hub for drug and gun dealing. Reporting shows the U.S. Attorney filed a complaint seeking to seize the property and that members of the hotel's own security team were among those charged, as reported by WBTV.

Prosecutors went so far as to describe the hotel as an "open-air market" for illegal activity, a label that has hung over the property as law enforcement continues its follow-up work in the area.

City Plans And Neighborhood Context

The Sugar Creek corridor has been under a city microscope for some time. Officials have been buying up motel properties and rolling out a "Corridors of Opportunity" playbook that includes park upgrades, sidewalk improvements, and other basic infrastructure that many neighborhoods take for granted.

Councilmember Dante Anderson and residents have also pushed for more cameras and better lighting as part of the stabilization strategy, according to WCCB. Local leaders argue that enforcement alone will not fix the corridor's reputation, but say pairing visible investment with targeted policing could slowly change how people see the area.

The late May operation at the Garden Inn and Suites led to federal prosecutors filing a seizure complaint and related indictments, a move that created a legal path to forfeit the hotel.
