A deadly shooting at an East St. Louis stop sign has led to a murder charge for a Swansea woman, authorities say, after a 24-year-old was found shot inside a vehicle earlier this week.
Prosecutors have charged Brion D. Bess, 23, of Swansea, with one count of first-degree murder in connection with the death of 24-year-old Ni’kajha A.K. Johnson. Johnson was discovered inside a vehicle at a stop sign at the intersection of 25th Street and Ridge Avenue, according to First Alert 4.
Investigation and charges
Police say the case stems from an investigation into a June 3 fatal shooting in East St. Louis. The East St. Louis Police Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police as part of the homicide probe, which remains active. Officials have not publicly detailed a possible motive or explained any relationship between Bess and Johnson, and the outlet reports Johnson "was found fatally shot inside a vehicle."
Legal implications
Under Illinois law, first-degree murder is defined in 720 ILCS 5/9-1 to include intentional killings and deaths that occur during certain forcible felonies. Sentencing provisions in state law allow for lengthy prison terms up to natural life; see the Illinois General Assembly for the Criminal Code of 2012 (720 ILCS 5/9-1) and the Illinois General Assembly for the Unified Code of Corrections (730 ILCS 5).
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
