Sweetwater WeHo, a lesbian-owned nightclub helmed by Bernadette “Berni” Gambino, quietly slid into a soft launch on Friday, lining up perfectly with the first day of WeHo Pride weekend. The 2,363-square-foot spot takes over the former Zpizza and 8oz Poke spaces at 8869–8871 Santa Monica Blvd., right at San Vicente in the middle of West Hollywood’s Rainbow District. Gambino knocked the two units into one open room, with bars running along the north and south walls, a central dance floor, a front patio, and a second-story loft that will house an office and the DJ booth.
Gambino has tied the bar directly to her survival story and her long-running community work, saying Sweetwater “will never turn anyone away who wants love and community,” as reported by WEHOonline. The outlet notes that Sweetwater is pouring a full range of alcohol, with cocktails, mocktails, wine, and beer on deck, but no food service. Programming is set to include drag shows, comedy, and karaoke. A grand opening is planned for mid‑June, following the soft opening that kicked off on Friday.
City Approval and Conditions
The West Hollywood Planning Commission signed off in February 2025 on the change of use from restaurant to nightclub and adopted Resolution No. PC 25‑1594, according to the Planning Commission minutes. Staff documents and those minutes outline a roughly 700‑square‑foot outdoor patio and a second‑floor mezzanine that is limited to staff and DJs. The commission also noted its authority to set closing times up to 2 a.m. and attached conditions around noise mitigation and queuing to keep pedestrian traffic moving smoothly along the sidewalk.
Why This Matters
Dedicated lesbian bars have been thinning out nationwide, so a women‑focused, lesbian‑owned venue in West Hollywood was always going to turn heads in queer media circles. GO Magazine cast Sweetwater as a homecoming for lesbian nightlife in the neighborhood, while LAmag slotted the club among several fresh arrivals pumping new energy into the Rainbow District.
What to Expect Inside
Sweetwater’s official site lists the address as 8869 Santa Monica Blvd. and posts hours of Wednesday through Friday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2 a.m., along with a newsletter sign‑up for events, per sweetwaterweho.com. Gambino has said staff will walk patrons to rideshares and cars as a safety priority, a measure she discussed in an interview with WEHOonline. Inside, the room is built around a central dance floor, flanked by bars on both sides, with an outdoor patio meant to draw daytime gatherings as well as late‑night crowds.
The soft opening and the WeHo Pride surge will give the city an early read on how Sweetwater folds into the late‑night mix, and neighbors plus nightlife regulars will be clocking how the patio use, lines, and noise stack up against the conditions in its permit. For event listings and reservations, the club is rolling out its calendar online and through social channels as it ramps up to the mid‑June grand opening. Expect a drip of programming announcements as the summer crowd rolls in and the dance floor gets a proper stress test.
