Tampa rolled out of bed into a wall of humidity today, as the observing station reported about 81°F early this morning with very high humidity. By mid to late afternoon, temperatures are expected to climb toward 92°F, with heat index values making it feel closer to 100°F.
Afternoon Heat and Hit-or-Miss Storms
Mostly cloudy skies this morning are forecast to thin to partly sunny conditions, but the tradeoff is a slight chance of showers and a few thunderstorms after noon. West-northwest winds stay light at 5 to 8 mph, and the chance of precipitation holds around 20 to 25%. According to NWS Tampa Bay, some inland neighborhoods could see heat index readings that make it feel like 100°F.
Tonight Into Wednesday: Front Brings Stronger Storm Threat
This evening, rain chances tick up from north to south as a weak front sags into the area. The overnight low will land near 74°F with about a 50% chance of showers and brief thunderstorms. On Wednesday, storms become more widespread, highs ease back into the mid-80s, and the rain chance jumps to around 70%. Some spots may pick up between a quarter and a half inch of rain, with storms capable of producing strong wind gusts and frequent lightning. Boaters and anyone planning outdoor evening activities should have a quick way to head inside if storms flare up.
Update to Our Weekend Forecast
We wrote on Saturday that Tampa would sizzle into the weekend, but this midday update shifts the focus to a stronger overnight and Wednesday storm threat while temperatures slip a few degrees. Plan Ahead
Hydrate throughout the day, go easy on strenuous outdoor activity during the peak afternoon heat, and move indoors at the first rumble of thunder. Lightning can strike even outside of heavy rain. For updates that keep pace with changing radar and any advisories, rely on official channels such as NWS Tampa Bay and local emergency alert systems before heading out this afternoon or tonight.
