Tiger Chinese Cuisine, long known around town for its soup dumplings and Sichuan plates, has quietly shuttered its University Square location, and another local Sichuan player is already stepping into the kitchen. The northwest-side suite that once drew regulars for xiaolongbao is being refitted, with fresh signage and a different crew expected to take over. For loyal diners, the handoff could mean familiar flavors under new ownership rather than a total reset.
The changeover was confirmed in an email exchange with a Ping's representative, according to MySA. The rep wrote, "Yes, Ping's Sichuan Kitchen is taking over the space formerly occupied by Tiger Chinese Cuisine. We are very excited to open a second restaurant!" The outlet also reported that Ping's is remodeling the former Tiger suite and "aims to open later this month," while noting that the timeline could still shift.
Owner Ping Xia launched the first Ping's Sichuan Kitchen in Stone Oak in 2025 and built a following for fiery, home-style dishes that lean on Chongqing and Sichuan techniques. As reported by San Antonio Current, the Stone Oak outpost serves mapo tofu, dry pot chicken and dumplings that have turned first-time visitors into regulars.
What Ping's Will Offer
Ping's menu already lists soup dumplings, Dongpo pork, dan dan noodles and spicy cumin lamb, dishes the owner says are rooted in family recipes and regional techniques, according to Ping's Sichuan Kitchen. The Stone Oak location's focus on numbing Sichuan heat and bright chili oil is likely to follow Ping's into the new University Square space, though managers sometimes tweak hours and a few dishes to fit what each neighborhood wants.
Where the Space Sits
The former Tiger Chinese suite is located in University Square at 12730 I-10, Suite 312, along the I-10 and De Zavala corridor, where a mix of local and chain tenants share the strip. Property listings identify University Square at 12730 W I-10 Hwy and show multiple retail suites in that complex, according to LoopNet.
What We Still Don't Know
Whether Tiger Chinese plans to resurface elsewhere in San Antonio is still an open question. MySA reported that attempts to reach the restaurant by phone and on social media went unanswered. This story will be updated if Ping's announces a firm opening date or Tiger Chinese issues an official statement about its next move.
