A stubborn fire near Ballpark Station sidelined TRAX riders yet again on Saturday, with the Utah Transit Authority pulling trains from the stop and shifting passengers to a bus bridge while crews put out the flames for a second time. UTA apologized for the mess, told riders to brace for delays and extra travel time, and did not immediately release details on what sparked the blaze or whether anyone was hurt.
The disruption landed on top of an already messy stretch of planned work around Ballpark that has affected the Red, Blue and Green lines since May 24, with bus bridges shuttling riders around the construction zone. According to the Utah Transit Authority, the maintenance window runs through June 20, with regular TRAX service slated to resume Sunday, June 21. Riders have been urged to build in extra time while crews finish up in the area.
Riders Rerouted To 900 South
In its latest update on X, Utah Transit Authority said TRAX trains would not be stopping at Ballpark Station and confirmed that the bus bridge is instead picking up and dropping off at 900 South Station, per the Utah Transit Authority. The agency noted that crews had to extinguish the fire again and apologized for the added disruption on top of the long-planned work. Riders are being directed to follow posted signs and listen to staff at affected stations to navigate alternate stops and transfers.
Service Impact And What To Expect
Ballpark Station is a key junction where the Blue, Red and Green TRAX lines meet, so skipping that stop can send delays rippling through downtown and on routes that connect to the airport. During planned maintenance and similar shakeups, UTA warns that bus bridges can tack on 30 minutes or more to typical trips, according to the Utah Transit Authority. When possible, riders are encouraged to start trips beyond the affected section or at least pad schedules to cover slower transfers and longer layovers.
How To Get Real-Time Updates
For those trying to thread the needle between trains and bus bridges, live locations and arrival times are available in Transit, which shows platform changes in real time. Riders can also call 801‑743‑3882 (RIDE‑UTA) for help or watch electronic signage at stations for detour alerts and boarding instructions. With work still underway around Smith's Ballpark this weekend, lingering delays are likely to stick around even after the fire is fully out.
