A 75-year-old woman died on Tuesday after being airlifted from Brown Mountain in the Tucson area, following reports that she was showing signs of heat exhaustion on the Brown Mountain Loop Trail. Rescue crews reached her after family members called for help. Two relatives who were hiking with her did not require medical treatment.
Rescue and Response
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the Pima County Sheriff's Department and Picture Rocks Fire Department located the hiker on the trail, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Unit flew her to a nearby hospital. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office identified her as 75-year-old Robin Janes and reported that there were no suspicious or criminal circumstances surrounding her death. The outlet also reported that the two family members who were with her did not need medical care.
Heat Wave Context
The incident comes during a brutal stretch of summer heat across Arizona, with multiple hikers found dead at the Grand Canyon this month and officials warning people to stay off trails during extreme heat watches, as reported by KOLD. Southern Arizona rescue groups say they are preparing for increased call volumes during heat warnings, even as some volunteer teams describe this season as quieter than expected so far. Emergency crews continue to stress that heat-related illness can escalate quickly on exposed desert routes.
About Brown Mountain
Brown Mountain Loop is a roughly 4.5-mile route managed by Pima County, with a primitive trailhead off McCain Loop Road and limited parking, according to Pima County. Its exposed slopes and sparse shade make midday treks especially risky for older visitors or anyone hiking without plenty of water and ways to cool down.
Pima County Sheriff’s officials urged the public to use extreme caution on local trails during periods of excessive heat, the department told FOX 10 Phoenix. Hikers are advised to start early, carry extra water and electrolytes, and turn back immediately at the first sign of dizziness, nausea, or confusion.
