A 43-year-old man died after a solo motorcycle crash Friday evening in Sacramento's Willowcreek neighborhood, marking the latest in a string of deadly wrecks for riders in the region. The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. near West River Drive and Orchard Lane. First responders took the rider to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities had not released his name as of Saturday morning.
According to The Sacramento Bee, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office online dashboard listed the death as a motorcycle crash, and Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Officer Anthony Gamble told the paper the rider was transported to a hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.
Coroner Dashboards Show Multiple Rider Deaths This Week
Per the Sacramento County Coroner's Office Case Statistics page, the office's online dashboards list at least two other recent motorcyclist fatalities in the region this week. One entry notes a 23-year-old who died after a crash on Interstate 80 near Norwood Avenue, and another lists a 19-year-old who died at Jefferson Boulevard and 15th Street in West Sacramento. Both appear on the coroner's motor-vehicle dashboards linked from the Case Statistics page.
Motorcyclist Fatalities Outsize Their Numbers On The Road
Data from UC Berkeley SafeTREC show that in 2021 motorcyclists accounted for about 14 percent of traffic fatalities nationwide while making up a far smaller share of registered vehicles. The same data indicate that Sacramento County reported 36 motorcycle fatalities in 2021, a reminder of how a relatively small number of crashes can have a heavy local impact.
Sacramento Police are investigating, and the Sacramento County Coroner will release the rider's name after next-of-kin notification, according to The Sacramento Bee. As of Saturday morning, officials had not provided additional details about the crash.
