A pre-dawn rollover crash in east Vancouver sent a 19-year-old driver to the hospital with serious injuries, sparked a small natural-gas leak and ended in a DUI arrest early Wednesday, according to city officials.

The single-vehicle wreck happened at about 2:20 a.m. near the 18900 block of Southeast 20th Street. Investigators say the vehicle left the roadway, plowed through a fence, struck a home and several parked cars, then finally came to rest in a tree. One person was thrown from the vehicle during the rollover but was conscious when first responders arrived, and emergency crews transported the injured driver to a hospital.

Firefighters Find Car Hanging In Tree, Clamp Down On Gas Leak

In a press release, the Vancouver Fire Department said crews arrived to find the car on its side with the rear end suspended in a tree. American Medical Response medics assisted firefighters with treating the patient at the scene.

The collision damaged natural-gas equipment and caused a small leak that firefighters “quickly identified and controlled,” according to the department. Northwest Natural was called in to handle permanent repairs, while city and utility crews worked together to secure the area and mitigate the hazard as police cleared the immediate surroundings.

Police Say Driver Showed Signs Of Impairment

Vancouver police told reporters the 19-year-old driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to KPTV. The outlet reported the driver sustained serious injuries, and that the Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate what led up to the crash.

Officials Use Crash To Underscore Safe-Driving Warnings

In its release, the Vancouver Fire Department repeated a familiar safety message, noting that speed, distraction, impairment, fatigue and failing to wear seat belts all significantly increase the odds of serious or fatal crashes. The department’s public information officer included photos from the scene and said crews fully controlled the gas hazard before Northwest Natural finished repairs to the damaged equipment.

Context

The wreck unfolded against a sobering backdrop on Vancouver’s streets. The City of Vancouver’s 2026 Local Road Safety Plan records 39 fatal crashes and more than 200 collisions causing severe injuries between 2020 and 2024, trends that city officials say they are trying to curb with engineering changes and stepped-up enforcement.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Unit will lead the ongoing investigation into Wednesday’s crash and will determine whether any additional charges are warranted.
