What started as a trip out of Wenatchee ended in a downtown Salem market, where a badly injured woman ran for her life and a 42-year-old man landed in jail on kidnapping and assault allegations, according to police.
Salem officers say the man, a Wenatchee resident, kidnapped and assaulted his partner, a 41-year-old woman from the same city, and drove her from Washington to Salem before she escaped. The woman was found with multiple severe injuries inside a downtown business and taken to a Salem hospital. After an investigation, officers arrested the suspect and booked him into the Marion County Jail.
From Wenatchee to a frantic dash into a Salem market
As reported by KOIN, Salem police investigators say the ordeal began in Wenatchee, where the suspect, identified as Michael Knabe, allegedly forced his partner into a vehicle and headed south. Knabe faces charges including first-degree kidnapping and second-degree assault, according to investigators.
Police say the victim eventually bolted into the Central Market on Center Street NE, seeking help from employees and customers. Officers found her at the store and transported her to a local hospital for treatment of what they described as multiple severe injuries. Detectives followed up on leads that they say ultimately pointed them to Knabe, who was taken into custody in Salem.
Domestic violence advocate steps in as community reacts
Salem police say a domestic violence advocate is now working with the woman to line up temporary housing and connect her with support services. Store staff at Central Market were the first to alert officers after she ran inside, according to police, and investigators are interviewing witnesses who were in or near the business at the time.
Neighbors and local community groups say incidents like this only reinforce long-standing concerns about intimate-partner violence in the region and the need for survivors to have quick access to help.
Suspect held in Marion County as case heads to prosecutors
According to KOIN, Knabe was booked into the Marion County Correctional Facility on the kidnapping and assault counts. The Marion County jail's public roster on JailExchange lists the facility at 4000 Aumsville Highway SE in Salem, where he is currently being held pending review by prosecutors. Authorities have not released information about bond or a court date.
What happens next
Marion County prosecutors will review the police investigation and decide whether to file formal charges. If they move forward, the case will proceed through the Marion County Circuit Court.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Salem police detectives. Local advocates are reminding survivors that crisis services, shelter options, and longer-term support remain available through community organizations and the Salem Police Department's victim services unit.
