A 33-year-old man died yesterday afternoon outside a SteelFab fabrication plant in west Charlotte after emergency crews were called to the scene. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have classified the death as a “public accident,” and state and local agencies are now involved in the investigation.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police records, the incident occurred just after 4:30 p.m. outside the plant on Old Dowd Road. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at 4:49 p.m., as reported by Queen City News.
Plant and Site Details
The Charlotte facility’s address, 8623 Old Dowd Road, is listed on SteelFab’s locations page. The company site notes multiple regional fabrication operations and a corporate presence in the area, consistent with heavy industrial activity at the Old Dowd Road location.
Investigation Underway
The N.C. Department of Labor told Queen City News that its inspectors are examining the circumstances surrounding the death. CMPD investigators have likewise described the case as a public accident.
Regulatory Context
Workplace fatalities in North Carolina typically trigger state labor inquiries and can draw federal oversight depending on the situation. OSHA’s inspection database shows prior enforcement activity tied to the Old Dowd Road address, although those federal records do not indicate anything about the cause of Tuesday’s death. OSHA records document past inspections at that site.
Officials have not released the victim’s name or a detailed account of how he came to be at the facility. Authorities with CMPD and the N.C. Department of Labor say the investigation remains active.
