Late-night gunfire tore through Chicago's West Garfield Park on Friday, leaving a 28-year-old man dead and two other men injured on a stretch of West Monroe Street that has seen more than its share of trouble.

Chicago police said officers were called just after 11 p.m. to the 3800-block of West Monroe, where they found the 28-year-old unresponsive. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Two 32-year-old men were also hit in the shooting and later showed up at area hospitals. One man was shot in the arm and went to Mount Sinai in good condition. The other was shot in the leg and got himself to Rush Hospital, also listed in good condition, according to ABC7 Chicago.

Where it happened

The 3800-block of West Monroe sits in the middle of West Garfield Park on the West Side, a neighborhood that has been repeatedly scarred by gun violence. This spring alone, the area saw several deadly attacks, including an April shooting that killed one person, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Residents and community leaders have been calling for more police presence along with stronger violence-prevention efforts as shootings continue to cluster in the area.

Investigation status

Police have not released any suspect description or possible motive in the case, and it was not immediately clear whether anyone was taken into custody. Area Four detectives are handling the investigation and are working to track down witnesses and evidence as the case remains open.
