A neighborhood fight on Jacksonville’s Westside turned into a shooting Friday afternoon when a man in his 40s was shot in the chest during an altercation on the 2000 block of Westmont Street, according to authorities.

Officers were called to the scene around 4:40 p.m. and found the wounded man, who was taken to a nearby hospital. He is listed in stable condition. The gunman took off before police arrived and is still on the run, but officials say they do not believe there is any ongoing danger to the public.

Investigation Underway

Robbery and Violent Crimes detectives are handling the case, going door to door in the neighborhood, talking with witnesses and combing through the scene for any evidence that might point them to the shooter.

Sgt. Mitlyng of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit told News4JAX that the victim and suspect know each other. Investigators say a fight broke out, the suspect pulled a gun, shot the victim, and then took off. Detectives did not recover any shell casings and are calling the shooting an isolated incident, saying there is no additional threat to nearby homes or businesses.
