A Clinton County pastor who once drew headlines for railing against LGBTQ-themed books is now headed to state prison. Silas Shelton was sentenced yesterday in Wilmington to 15 years behind bars after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual contact with a minor, in a hearing that packed the courtroom with supporters and relatives from both sides and ended with the judge saying Shelton showed no remorse.
Judge Issues Consecutive Terms, Cites Lack Of Remorse
Judge Andrew McCoy ordered three consecutive five-year prison terms, one for each count of unlawful sexual conduct, for a total of 15 years, and required Shelton to register as a Tier II sex offender for 25 years, according to WKRC. “When you take absolutely no accountability for your actions, you demonstrate no remorse,” McCoy said in court, the station reported.
Plea Deal Cut Down Original Indictment
Shelton entered guilty pleas in April to three counts of third-degree unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and a reduced misdemeanor count of menacing by stalking as part of a negotiated agreement that dismissed more serious charges, according to Metro Weekly. His arrest came in October after an investigation by Wilmington police, with that initial development first reported by FOX19 and other affiliates.
School Board Clash Pushed Pastor Into Public Spotlight
The case drew broader attention after Shelton publicly blasted LGBTQ-themed books at a Little Miami school book fair in 2023, comments that were widely shared online and prompted the district to revise how it handles book fairs, according to Newsweek. Those earlier appearances on the culture-war front helped fuel the reaction when the criminal charges later became public.
Victim Impact And Tense Courtroom Moments
The victim and her father addressed the court before sentencing, with the victim telling the judge there was "no sentence" that could give her back what Shelton took, and the hearing drew people connected to both her family and the defendant, WKRC reported. While some of Shelton’s family members pleaded for leniency, prosecutors argued he exploited both his relationship with the family and his position in the church to harm the victim.
Legal Stakes And Sex-Offender Registration
Each third-degree felony count carries one to five years in prison under Ohio law, and because McCoy ordered the three terms to run consecutively, Shelton received the full 15-year total available at sentencing, Metro Weekly noted. The court also ordered sex-offender registration, and Clinton County Common Pleas Court is listed as the venue where the felony case was handled and the sentence imposed, according to county court information.
Where The Case Stands Now
The sentence caps a timeline that started with Shelton’s arrest last fall and continued through his April guilty pleas, which narrowed a 12-count indictment to the charges used at sentencing. Local reporting has identified the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office as leading the case and said anyone with additional information was encouraged to contact Wilmington police or the prosecutor’s office, according to coverage from area stations.
