A routine morning at the Walmart on Atlanta Highway in Winder turned tense on Wednesday when a person inside the store reportedly made a bomb threat, prompting an immediate shutdown and law enforcement sweep.
Barrow County deputies locked down the building, cleared shoppers and employees, and focused on a vehicle seen leaving the parking lot. Within minutes, they had tracked it down and taken the occupant into custody. K9 teams then combed the store, and with no explosives found, management reopened the doors and got business back to normal.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the threat was reported from inside the Winder Walmart. The outlet reports that emergency operators relied on the sheriff’s Real-Time Crime Center and regional Flock license plate readers to follow the fleeing vehicle and guide deputies straight to it.
How deputies tracked the suspect
Flock Safety's platform lets law enforcement search license plate reader hits by time and location and share that data across jurisdictions, which can speed up active investigations. When those LPR results feed into a real-time crime center, analysts can push fast, usable leads directly to deputies on the street.
Store cleared and suspect in custody
The Barrow County Sheriff's Office, as cited by FOX 5 Atlanta, said specially trained K9 teams swept the Winder store and found no explosives, allowing employees and shoppers to return. Deputies arrested the vehicle's occupant "within minutes" of the emergency call. Investigators have not yet released the person's name, age, or possible motive.
Legal note
Under Georgia law, threatening to cause an evacuation or to release a hazardous substance can satisfy the elements of a terroristic threat. According to Justia, O.C.G.A. § 16-11-37 sets out the offense and the potential penalties upon conviction. Prosecutors have not yet said whether charges will be filed in the Winder case, and authorities plan to release more information as the investigation moves forward.
No injuries were reported at the store, and routine operations resumed once deputies cleared the scene. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, and residents can look for official updates on the Barrow County Sheriff's Office website.
