A nighttime walk through a Winter Garden crosswalk turned fatal on May 28 when a pickup truck struck and killed a man at the intersection of East Story Road and South Dillard Street.
Winter Garden Fire Rescue crews treated the victim at the scene and began transporting him toward Orlando Health Health Central. He was pronounced dead while en route. Authorities later identified him as 41-year-old David Jimenez. Police say the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
According to West Orange Times & Observer, the collision happened at about 8:46 p.m. A 2021 GMC Sierra was turning from East Story Road onto South Dillard Street when it struck Jimenez, who was in the marked crosswalk on the south side of the intersection. The Winter Garden Police Department's Traffic Homicide Unit responded and is now leading the investigation.
Regional Safety Trends Under Scrutiny
The deadly crash lands amid an ongoing regional push to make streets safer for people on foot. A MetroPlan Orlando analysis cited in local coverage found roughly a 30% drop in crashes resulting in deaths or serious injuries since 2018, even as certain corridors remain trouble spots, according to WDBO. It is a split-screen picture of progress in the data alongside persistent danger in specific locations.
City Vision Zero Push and Ongoing Probe
City planning materials show that Winter Garden has adopted a Vision Zero Safety Action Plan that commits the city to eliminating traffic fatalities. The plan prioritizes high-injury corridors for engineering improvements and competitive grant funding, aiming to channel resources where they can do the most good.
The Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the May 28 collision. Anyone with information or with video from the area is asked to contact the Winter Garden Police Department at 407-656-3636, according to the department's website.
