A deadly wrong-way crash on westbound Ohio 2 in Painesville Township turned a routine patrol into a fiery scene Saturday, leaving a Mentor man dead and an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper injured.

Investigators say a brown 2011 Toyota Scion was heading east in the westbound lanes near the Route 44 interchange when it slammed head-on into a marked OSHP cruiser. After the initial impact, the Scion caught fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while officials described the trooper’s injuries as non-life-threatening.

Authorities identified the driver as 61-year-old Jerry Alberico of Mentor. The trooper was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to Cleveland.com. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the cause of the wrong-way travel remains under investigation and is leading the crash probe.

Trooper Treated At TriPoint

Officials said the trooper was transported to University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township for evaluation and care. University Hospitals lists TriPoint at 7590 Auburn Road and notes that the facility offers 24-hour emergency services along with a full range of acute-care capabilities.

Investigation Underway

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is working to determine what led to the wrong-way run and has not publicly identified a cause, such as impairment, speed, or mechanical failure. Cleveland.com reported that the Scion caught fire after the collision, and authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the OSHP.

State and local crews briefly closed the area while emergency teams worked the scene and cleared debris. Authorities said additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
