A fatal crash inside the Empire City Casino complex stunned workers and neighbors on Monday evening, after Yonkers police say a woman was found dead near a wrecked car by Yonkers Raceway.
Police tape and emergency vehicles ringed the scene as first responders worked around a heavily damaged vehicle near the racetrack. A video shared on social media shows crews clustered around the car in a normally quiet corner of the property. Investigators have launched an inquiry into what happened, and authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
Yonkers police confirmed the deadly crash and said the person found near the vehicle is believed to have been the driver, according to News 12 Hudson Valley. The outlet reports that nearby business owners were baffled by how a car could end up in that particular spot, and neighbors described the sight of flashing lights and police activity as jarring in an area that usually sees little traffic.
Where It Happened
The crash occurred on a stretch of roadway that runs alongside Yonkers Raceway and the Empire City Casino grounds, part of MGM Resorts' Yonkers property. Empire City Casino operates as a racino complex, drawing heavy foot traffic and serving as the focus of ongoing zoning talks and potential expansion plans.
Investigation Ongoing
Detectives are now trying to piece together how the vehicle ended up in that section of the complex and what led to the woman’s death. Yonkers police told reporters they are waiting on autopsy results before sharing more about the cause of the crash, News 12 Hudson Valley reports.
So far, authorities have not indicated whether speed, impairment or a mechanical issue might have been factors, and no charges have been announced.
Neighbors React
Residents and nearby business owners said the crash felt out of place for that particular roadway, which they described as more of a service route than a busy thoroughfare. Many expressed disbelief that a car could wind up so close to the racetrack area.
City officials have not outlined any immediate traffic or safety changes in response to the incident. Investigators say they expect to release additional information once the autopsy is completed and follow-up work on the case moves forward.
