“Today, we grieve the loss of one of our own,” DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin said in the department's statement. The Texas Department of Public Safety said Romero had served with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office before joining DPS as a member of Class B-2025 and was stationed in Childress. He is survived by his wife, Francisca, and two young sons.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized, and the department said Romero is the 244th DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1823.
