One of Downtown Long Beach’s biggest housing bets is now climbing out of the ground. Alexan West End, a multi-building apartment complex from Trammell Crow Residential and partner R&V Management, has moved into its vertical construction phase at 600 West Broadway.
The first two phases will bring roughly 600 apartments in four mid-rise buildings to what was, until recently, a wide-open surface parking lot just north of the Long Beach World Trade Center. Framing and site work are already visible from Broadway, a clear sign that one of downtown’s largest housing projects is pushing toward delivery next year. Neighbors and commuters can expect this previously sleepy superblock next to the Hilton and the World Trade Center to look very different as the project fills in.
What’s going up
According to Urbanize LA, the initial phases will feature a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments set in seven- and eight-story buildings. Planned resident amenities include a fitness center, pool and spa, and a rooftop deck.
Architecture firm Studio One Eleven has carved the large parcel into internal streets and pedestrian paseos, a layout intended to create multiple front doors and clearer sightlines through the site. The project replaces a sprawling expanse of parking and sits just east of a 142-unit complex at Broadway and Magnolia that opened to residents in 2022.
Money and ownership
Financing for the opening phases closed in March 2024. The Real Deal reports that CBRE arranged a roughly 200 million dollar capital stack that includes a 166 million dollar construction loan and a 34 million dollar mezzanine piece.
Trammell Crow Residential is leading development with R&V Management as a partner, after working since 2019 to assemble entitlements and permits for the broader master plan on the site.
Approvals and scale
The city signed off on a final subdivision map for the property, Tract No. 82671, in April 2023. That procedural step cleared the way to split the superblock into multiple lots for phased construction, according to the City of Long Beach’s public records (City of Long Beach Legistar).
Public notices and coverage show that the master plan allows for approximately 750 to 756 homes if a third phase is built, an option that would add a high-rise tower on the western edge of the site, as reported by LA YIMBY.
When residents might move in
Market research pegs Alexan West End as one of the largest multifamily projects currently under construction in the Los Angeles region. The site is expected to wrap construction in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to Kidder Mathews.
The development’s official marketing site lists an Opening in Fall 2026 and is already collecting a VIP interest list for prospective renters (Alexan West End).
What it means for downtown
Beyond hundreds of new apartments, project filings and coverage outline plans for a neighborhood market, roughly 1,510 parking spaces (including replacement stalls), bike parking and storage, and a network of pedestrian passages intended to stitch the block back into the downtown street grid, according to LA YIMBY.
If the optional third phase moves ahead, the tower and additional homes would significantly reshape the west end of downtown, adding density and new retail that could rework midday foot traffic around the World Trade Center and nearby hotels.
