A quiet overnight in Cuyahoga Falls turned chaotic Wednesday when a man that a family says Akron officers had just dropped off near their home forced his way inside and attacked a 64-year-old Army veteran and the veteran’s stepmother.
The veteran, who served more than 20 years, ended up with bruised ribs and a cut to his face, his son told reporters. The family says neighbors’ security-camera footage shows the man stumbling out of a cruiser, then heading straight up their driveway shortly before the break-in.
Security Camera Footage Raises Tough Questions
According to News 5 Cleveland, the victim’s son, Josh, says the video appears to show Akron officers taking off the man’s handcuffs. The man then waves at the officers and walks toward the home on Lynn Drive.
Cuyahoga Falls officers wrote in their report that the man got inside through a closed but unlocked side door. The homeowner confronted him, and the two ended up in a scuffle that spilled from inside the house to outside, according to that report.
The family says the veteran’s stepmother was knocked down during the fight and is now recovering.
Crisis Training Meets Real Life
The County of Summit has long promoted crisis-intervention and behavioral-health training that lists Akron and Cuyahoga Falls police among participating agencies, underscoring local expectations that officers are equipped to deal with people in crisis, according to the Summit County ADM Board.
Those programs focus on de-escalation and steering people toward services instead of simply dropping them in neighborhoods, advocates say. Neighbors and family members now say they are wondering how that training was applied in this case, if at all.
Charges Filed and Department Review Underway
Cuyahoga Falls officers arrested the man on aggravated burglary and assault charges, and he is being held in the Summit County Jail, News 5 Cleveland reports.
Akron Police told the station their officers had responded to a call for service, then dropped the person off near the Lynn Drive address. Lt. Michael Murphy said the department has met with the homeowners and is reviewing what happened on that call and afterward.

Cuyahoga Falls police are handling the trespassing and assault investigation. Akron’s internal review is focused on how and why the man was left near a private residence in the first place.
Family members say they want clear answers about why the person was released in that neighborhood and whether department policy or individual officer judgment drove that decision.
