A desperate attempt to pull a friend away from a dog attack on an Akron street ended in gunfire yesterday evening, leaving a 15-year-old boy dead and a dog wounded as investigators work to sort out how a chaotic struggle turned fatal.
According to 19 News, the Summit County Medical Examiner said the incident unfolded around 7:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of Packard Dr. A friend had gone to visit the teenager when a dog attacked, and during the struggle that followed, both the 15-year-old and the dog were shot. The boy was rushed to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency department at about 8 p.m.
County medical officials say the gunfire and the dog’s injury occurred in the middle of that struggle, but many details remain unclear. Neighbors and officials have released little so far while authorities piece together a timeline and determine who did what, and when.
Where the child was treated
Akron Children’s Hospital is the region’s primary pediatric center and regularly handles critical trauma cases from across Northeast Ohio at its downtown campus. According to Akron Children’s Hospital, its Akron location at One Perkins Square serves as the system’s main emergency and specialty hub for pediatric care.
Investigation underway
As reported by 19 News, the Summit County Medical Examiner has provided the initial account to the media, but authorities have not said who fired the shot or whether any charges might follow. The case remains a developing investigation, and officials have urged anyone with information to contact local law enforcement as they work to determine how a dog attack turned into a deadly shooting.
