A 30-year-old Alliance woman was killed this morning after a violent two-vehicle collision at the intersection of U.S. 62 and Harmont Avenue NE in Canton, where one car flipped, and both vehicles ended up near the southeast corner of the crossroads.
Canton police and emergency crews rushed to the scene and found significant damage to both vehicles. One vehicle had overturned, and responders worked to secure the area while tending to the injured drivers.
According to Cleveland 19 News, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado was heading east on U.S. 62 when it hit a 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage that was turning south onto Harmont Avenue. Police identified the Mitsubishi driver as Erin R. Stevens, 30, of Alliance. She had to be removed from the vehicle because of the extensive damage and was later pronounced dead at Aultman Hospital.
The driver of the Silverado was also taken to Aultman, where they were treated and released, according to the same report.
US 62 and Harmont Intersection Has Long Seen Crashes
The crash unfolded at an intersection that has already been on local officials' radar. A 2024 safety study from Stark County notes that the U.S. 62 and Harmont Avenue area has been a safety priority, documenting more than 140 crashes in the study zone between 2018 and 2022.
The report recommends changes such as high-visibility crosswalks and adjusted signal timing. It also flags roadway geometry, multiple access points, and driver decision-making as factors that can increase crash risk along that stretch of road.
Investigation Underway
Canton police told Cleveland 19 News that the Canton Metro Crash Team responded to the scene and is handling the investigation. At this stage, officers say they do not believe speed played a role in the collision.
Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors. The Metro Crash Team is expected to review physical evidence from the intersection, examine vehicle damage, and reconstruct the incident as part of its probe.
Police have not released many additional details while the investigation remains active. Authorities say they plan to share more information as it becomes available.
