American Canyon police say a routine traffic stop turned into a gun and drug bust last Wednesday after a K-9 team flagged a pickup near Silver Oak Trail and Toscana Drive.

Officers pulled over a 2002 white Ford F-150 and brought in K-9 Jett, who, according to police, signaled something was amiss. That alert set off a deeper look that ended with the arrest of 42-year-old Ryan Gerald Tilson and a search that moved from the truck to a nearby home.

As reported by the Napa Valley Register, officers conducted a consent search and then obtained permission to search Tilson’s residence. The Register notes that Tilson was booked on suspicion of illegal firearm possession and sales of a controlled substance, then released the next day on $50,000 bail.

Weapons And Suspected Narcotics Recovered

According to the Register, officers and detectives reported finding two shotguns in and around the vehicle, including one that had been altered into a compact sawed-off shotgun. They also recovered three semiautomatic handguns, two of which were loaded, along with parts of an assault rifle.

Investigators additionally located suspected methamphetamine and packaging they say was consistent with drug sales. Those items formed the basis for the felony counts listed in the case against Tilson, the Register reported.

How K-9s Fit Into Patrol Work

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office says its K-9 teams patrol throughout the valley, with some units specifically assigned to American Canyon. The dogs are trained for building searches, tracking people and detecting narcotics.

Napa County notes that both deputies and their canines must complete official certification and ongoing in-service training before they hit the streets on patrol.

Legal Implications

Under California law, short-barreled shotguns fall into a tightly controlled category of weapons. The state broadly restricts their manufacture, possession and sale under Penal Code provisions that apply to short-barreled firearms, and those offenses can be filed as wobblers that may be treated as either misdemeanors or felonies depending on the circumstances.

Court filings and official agency releases are expected to outline any formal charges and key court dates as prosecutors decide how to proceed. Public booking and court records in Napa County will provide the next round of updates as they are filed.
