Amy's Ice Creams is putting down roots on Austin's 12th Street, this time on four wheels. The local favorite is parking a permanent ice cream truck at 927 W. 12th St., right at the intersection of 12th and North Lamar, with a grand-opening celebration set for Thursday. The first 50 guests in line will score a free small scoop starting at 11 a.m.
According to CultureMap Austin, a press release and Instagram post promise giveaways, Amy's swag and "plenty of surprises" as part of National Ice Cream Month. The truck is expected to carry roughly 90 percent of what a typical Amy's shop offers, including rotating flavors, toppings, dairy-free options, and drinks.
What they will scoop
The truck's menu sticks close to Amy's greatest hits: Mexican vanilla, Oreo, strawberry, Belgian chocolate, cold-press vanilla, sweet cream, dark chocolate, coffee, and Zilker mint chip all appear on the brand's flavor list. Rotating specialties and dairy-free choices are also planned for the truck.
The rollout ties into Amy's Sweet Fleet and other July promotions outlined on the company's site, which details the month's featured flavors and events, per Amy's Ice Creams.
Opening day and hours
The grand-opening event Thursday starts at 11 a.m., when that first wave of free scoops kicks off. After opening day, the truck is slated to keep regular hours: Sundays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., according to CultureMap Austin.
The 12th Street truck is also expected to serve as home base for collaborations and extra happenings throughout July, as reported by CultureMap Austin.
A spot in the neighborhood
The new truck lands across from The Tavern, joining a stretch of North Lamar that has been in flux with recent retail moves and renovations. Longtime music hub Waterloo Records relocated to 1105 N. Lamar in summer 2025, just a block from Amy's new setup, according to MySA.
Amy's has leaned into summer celebrations after years of neighborhood presence, and the truck offers a low-key way to bring scoops straight to the 12th Street foot traffic. For anyone who skips opening day, the truck is expected to stay put as a regular neighborhood fixture through July while the brand rolls out National Ice Cream Month promotions, per Amy's Ice Creams.
